1. What kinds of wood do you use? What color are those woods?
We can get any type of wood you desire. For example, we recently
constructed a kitchen using reclaimed birch wood from the bottom of Lake Superior for one
our customers. Most customers use the following woods: oak, birch, maple, cherry, hickory,
Brazilian cherry, and ash.
All wood has a natural color, but we can also treat the wood with a
stain to produce a desired color. For instance, many
people want the dark, rich look of mahogany but do not want to endanger
the rainforest or incur the expense. We can dye a piece of birch with a
mahogany finish to give you the perfect look.
The naturally darker woods are: cherry (golden, reddish brown), Brazilian cherry (deep red)
The naturally lighter woods are: oak (red oak is the most common and has a light red tint), birch
(uniform light color allowing for even stain consistency), maple (one of the lightest woods with an
meandering grain pattern), hickory (color in hickory can range dramatically within the same piece of
wood, creating a dramatic look), ash (light wood with long grains of medium-brown color running through the wood)
See our “products” page for more information about wood characteristics.

2. What are the unique benefits to the different types of woods?
Oak and birch are the most popular and affordable woods. Oak has a more predominant grain pattern and easily
absorbes stain, creating a uniform finished product. Oak is known for its strength and hardness. Birch has a
softer grain pattern, which allows for versatile coloring. Birch can be treated with a clear stain, can be painted with
a color to replicate a more expensive wood (i.e. mahogany or cherry) and can be painted a solid color easily (i.e. white or black).
Hickory has a medium grain pattern and a variety of colors within one piece of wood, which enhances the beauty of
the wood itself in a cabinet. Hickory can be stained to any color while retaining the beautiful, natural color variation.
Hickory is known for its strength.
Cherry is a closed-grain board, which means that it is smooth to the touch, unlike oak. Cabinets made in cherry creates
a timeless look for any room.
Ash is not as often used, but creates a dramatic look from the fibrous grain of the wood. Ash is known for its strength.
Brazilian cherry, with its dark red tone, appears to look similar to a traditional mahogany, and creates an elegant look
for a sophisticated room.
Maple is known for its hardness and closed grain, creating a smooth feel to the touch. Maple is a traditional wood with
timeless roots that creates a classic look.

4. How long does it take to remodel a bathroom or kitchen?

5. How do I make my kitchen or bathroom space more efficient?
We have developed many techniques for making the most of your space. For example, a cabinet bed that
folds into a wall allows a home office to be used as a second bedroom, or a turn-table (“Lazy Susan”)
in a kitchen cabinet enables efficient utilization of otherwise unusable corner space.

6. What are the advantages of the each type of countertop?
A. Laminate type counters ("Formica") come in a wide variety of colors and patterns at a moderate price.

7. Why are cabinets from national retailers so cheap?
Cabinets that are sold at national retail stores are made in bulk to fit into many houses.
Often times these products are made with lower quality materials. These products are not made
to fit your particular needs and often will not meet your particular remodeling goals, such as
dealing with an unusual space. Our design creativity and focus on individual needs allows us
to come up with unique ways to meet our clients’ goals better than cheaper mass-produced products,
and therefore our customers can achieve a more efficient and beautiful kitchen or bath.
